General Information You Should Know About Sesotho
Based on the 2011 census data, the number of Sesotho speakers in South Africa alone exceeds 3.84 million, representing 7.6% of the population. Globally, there are over 6.52 million Sotho speakers. Given its significance in South Africa and its expanding presence worldwide, Sesotho continues to be a vital component of LocaDifferent's translation services.
The Basotho Nation, which spans both sides of the Upper Caledon River, was formed at the onset of the 19th Century. This union was the culmination of several independent Basotho clans, including Bakwena, Bafokeng, Bahlakwana, Batlokwa, Makgolokwe, and Bataung. The consolidation was the aftermath of the fragmentation of individual clans during the brutal native wars of the 1820s, instigated by the Zulu under Shaka. A notable figure in this unification was Morena Lepoqo Moshweshwe, a highly intelligent king of the Bokwena clan, famed for his diplomatic skills.
Moshoeshoe, as he is commonly known, is one of the most celebrated figures in African history. His life spanned the traditional to the colonial, and his kingdom-building efforts were instrumental in the Basotho's survival. During his reign, invaders who had been displaced from Natal by Shaka invaded his homeland, causing significant social and political disintegration. Moshoeshoe's moral influence and military prowess were pivotal in rallying the survivors and instilling confidence to rebuild a kingdom. However, his efforts were soon challenged by the western world intruding upon him. Armed colored horsemen, French Protestant missionaries, British Officials bearing impressive presents and Afrikaner pastoralists, were among those who posed challenges to his reign.
Despite the challenges, the unity of the Basotho people resulted in the amalgamation of different dialects spoken in the various clans. The Bakwena and Bafokeng's language became the dialect of the ruling class and was adopted as the language of the whole tribe. The resulting language is known as Sesotho, which is spoken in Lesotho, Free State, and Gauteng provinces of South Africa.
